Voice navigation was first integrated into an avalanche transceiver by ORTOVOX during the 2021/22 season.Starting with the model DIRACT VOICE, voice commands, wording, and softwarebased trigger logic have been continuously developed. Two manufacturers now offer a total of five avalanche transceiver models with voice functionality.Software-defined events that trigger voice commands may include changes in device state, direction, or distance. Two peer-reviewed studies by Wallner et al. indicate that voice guidance can reduce stress and support learning. This paper describes the evolution of voice commands from DIRACT VOICE to FOCUS VOICE and FOCUS PRO and discusses the benefits of voice navigation for training and emergency use.It is based on the author's direct involvement in the development of these devices, internal ORTOVOX product development information, systematic field observations, and qualitative interviews with avalanche course instructors.Voice commands do not replace the visual user interface or training. They complement both, particularly when the rescuer's visual attention should remain focused on the avalanche debris.
