Counts differ because each database indexes a different set of publications. We treat OpenAlex as the canonical count; Google Scholar is not shown (no API, and crawling it violates its ToS).
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is progressing from systems designed primarily to assist human users toward increasingly autonomous systems capable of reasoning, planning, coding, experimentation, and scientific discovery. One of the most significant potential developments in this field is the emergence of AI systems that can contribute to the development and improvement of future AI systems. Rather than representing an abrupt transition to completely autonomous intelligence, this development is more realistically understood as a gradual expansion of AI-assisted research and engineering.Recent advances in AI agents, automated software engineering, machine-learning experimentation, and multiagent scientific research demonstrate that AI can already perform important components of the development cycle. Research systems are increasingly capable of generating hypotheses, writing and testing code, conducting experiments, evaluating alternative solutions, and iteratively improving their outputs. However, current systems remain limited in reliability, generalization, independent scientific reasoning, and their ability to consistently reproduce or surpass expert human research.
