GitHub or Codeberg? As the platform is owned by Microsoft, and recently started training its AI models on user data without users’ consent, growing attention to digital sovereignty and research integrity has prompted researchers and institutions to reflect whether alternatives are available. One such alternative could be Codeberg, a European non-profit platform that offers many of the same core functionalities as GitHub while operating under a community-driven governance model. In this lecture, we will explore the similarities and differences between GitHub and Codeberg, discuss the broader concept of digital sovereignty, and consider the pros and cons of both platforms.
