Counts differ because each database indexes a different set of publications. We treat OpenAlex as the canonical count; Google Scholar is not shown (no API, and crawling it violates its ToS).
It correctly identifies the core problem: as GPU-side AI upscaling becomes more generative and powerful (DLSS 5.0’s 3D-Guided Neural Rendering being the current example), it also becomes more exclusive. DLSS 5.0 launched around September 3, 2026, with NBA 2K27 as the first title, exclusive to RTX 50-series at launch (plus GeForce NOW), adding photoreal lighting/materials on top of prior reconstruction + multi-frame generation. It is not available on consoles, non-NVIDIA hardware, or older GPUs, and early reports note meaningful performance cost.
