This essay argues that generative AI severs a longstanding inference between the artefacts of intelligence and the presence of an intelligent mind. It distinguishes demonstrated capability from judgement, introduces the concepts of scope judgement, operative blindness and collective operative blindness, and examines how the vocabulary of intelligence can function as a credential for trust and delegation. Drawing on philosophy, frontier AI research, administrative law and institutional case studies, the text traces how machine-generated classifications can acquire authority, propagate through descendant records and persist after the evidential basis from which they arose has been discredited or corrected. The central claim is stark: computational systems can inherit the authority historically granted to intelligence before the judgement associated with that word has been demonstrated.
